The Dog's Gaze: A Visual History

What do dogs do in art? This dazzlingly original cultural history, written by Cundill Prize-winning historian Thomas W. Laqueur, explores why dogs feature more prominently than any other animal in the visual stories we create about ourselves.

Long before the phrase ‘man’s best friend’ became common parlance, dogs were already standing beside us in art as in life. Laqueur invites readers to explore their ubiquitous presence in visual art, tracing their role from the Palaeolithic age through the western tradition, featuring artists from Giotto to Goya and Rubens to Rego.
